Jessye Norman sings Alban Berg – Pierre Boulez – Ann Schein

Deux femmes rendent hommage à un amateur de la gente féminine, Alban Berg (cf. Suite lyrique)… Au programme de ce CD, Les 7 premiers lieder et les 5 Altenberg lieder op. 4, avec l’orchestre symphonique de Londres dirigé par Pierre Boulez, de 1984 à 1987, et un recueil de lieder de jeunesse – 14 – avec Ann Schein au piano. La pièce maîtresse est sans doute ces fameux Altenberg lieder ; le texte n’étant pas repris dans les ouvrages de Mosco Carner et d’Étienne Barilier, les voici d’après le site www.recmusic.org On a bien du mal à imaginer le scandale qui eut lieu à la création au Musikverein sous la direction de Schoenberg, le 31 mars 1913, soit 2 mois avant celui du Sacre au théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Je ne vois pas de grivoiserie évidente dans le texte – contrairement à Barilier – l’hypothèse de la motivation de ce scandale étant d’après certains le contraste entre l’imposante force orchestrale mise au service d’à peine 11′ de musique (pourquoi pas un chœur en plus, mais il me semble bien que Berg n’a jamais utilisé de chœur)… La police dut intervenir, une gifle fut donnée ce qui fit dire à Oscar Strauss que c’était bien le seul son harmonieux de la soirée… On est épaté par Jessye Norman que l’on n’attendait pas dans ce répertoire, c’est hors-normes, et l’on chérira les lieder de jeunesse avec accompagnement de piano, certes un peu schumanniens ou straussiens, mais donnés avec un naturel étonnant. Cette version des Altenberg lieder surpasse la précédente version de Boulez avec Halina Lukomska et le BBC symphony orchestra – CBS 1967 – cette version des 3 pièces op. 16 « berça » ma jeunesse jusqu’à ce que j’obtienne un concert de Kubelík. Vocalement, c’est évident, mais la direction de Boulez me paraît ici plus expressive, tout en respectant le texte, alors que la plus récente version d’Abbado à Vienne pour DG en 2002 avec Juliane Banse me semble un peu pêcher par trop de soins apporté aux détails.

Lyric suite)… In this CD, the first 7 Lieder and 5 Altenberg Lieder op. 4, with the London symphony orchestra conducted by Pierre Boulez, from 1984 to 1987, and a collection of youth Lieder – 14 – with Ann Schein at the piano. The centre piece is undoubtedly these famous Altenberg Lieder; the text not being included in the books of Mosco Carner and Etienne Barilier, here it is according to the www.recmusic.org site One has great difficulty to imagine the scandal which took place at the creation in the Musikverein under the direction of Schoenberg, on March 31, 1913, that is to say 2 months before that of the Rite of spring at the theatre of the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The assumption of the motivation of this scandal being according to some by the contrast between the imposing orchestral force put at the service to hardly 11 ‘ of music (why not a chorus moreover, but it seems to me that Berg never used any chorus)… The police force had to intervene, a slap was given which made say to Oscar Strauss that it was well the only harmonious sound of the evening… One is impressed by Jessye Norman who we did not imagine in this repertory, this is out-standards, and one will cherish the Lieder of youth with piano accompaniment, certainly a little schumannian or straussian, but given with an astonishing naturalness. This version of Altenberg Lieder exceeds the preceding version of Boulez with Halina Lukomska and the BBC symphony orchestra – CBS 1967 – I so cherished the included 3 pieces op. 6 included in this album till I got a Kubelík concert…. Vocally, it is obvious, but the direction of Boulez appears more expressive to me here, while respecting the text, whereas the most recent version of Abbado in Vienna for DG in 2002 with Juliane Banse seems to me a little too detailed at the expense of expressions.
