« Un must » !

Oistrakh – Beethoven – Malcom Sargent – André Cluytens

Note that this is the first time a CD offers the obvious coupling of the Triple Concerto Op. 56 and the Violin Concerto Op.61 !Program :

  • Triple Concerto : Malcolm Sargent and the Philharmonia in May 1958 with the Ostrakh trio: David Oistrakh, violin – Svyatoslav Knushevitsky, cello and Lev Oborin, piano
  • Concerto for violin : David Oistrakh, Andre Cluytens directing the National Orchestra of French Radio in November of the same year.

Pierre Barbier highlights two very right things : the first is that these works are part of the  » heroic  » period of Beethoven, the second is that the Triple is often best performed by an established trio.

Triple concerto

My dear Kubelík gave it in concert with the trio of Trieste, but their technical quality was far inferior to this one (1949-1968 ) . There are also among the studio versions a Stern / Rose / Istomin release, one of the Chung family, the Trio Wanderer or the Beaux Arts Trio, among others. This edition is superb and lively; while there are some strange sounds (oboe ), a pre-eminence of the violinist, everything is interpreted with such musicality, obvious breathing . Add that the orchestra sounds less stiff than the famous first version of Karajan (which we love unlike most critics …). We will not repeat here the phenomenal sound quality of Praga Digitals reissues … (1958 !).

Violin Concerto

There is apparently no more website dedicated to David Oistrakh… He has recorded it many times in studio: Gauk, Schuchter, Cluytens thus, Roshdestvenski, Erhling and Konwitschny – this latest version is amazing, but Peter Barbier assures me that the tape could not be reissued in decent conditions. Anyway, this reissue with Cluytens is enough for our happiness without going into detail, it is again as if the payers were in your room, LvB ditto … « A must ! »
