Shilkret – Stravinsky – Tansman – Schoenberg – Castelnuovo Tedesco – Milhaud – Toch

Reading “Igor Stravinsky” by Alexandre Tansman, I remembered the existence of this collective work, ordered from Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Tansman, Milhaud, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Toch by Nathaniel Shilkret.

Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) lengthily attended Stravinsky in the Californian musical circle of the Forties, of many Jewish composers driven out of Europe by the Nazis and having emigrated towards Hollywood; thurifer of Stravinsky, he will move away later on, probably because of the increasing influence of Schoenbergien Robert Craft, but remained faithful to him.

Nathaniel Shilkret (1889-1982), was all at the same time musician of orchestra (clarinet), man of radio, recording (RCA Victor) – he recorded for the first time An American in Paris in 1925). Composer, in particular of film musics, he worked in many fields and collaborated for example with Armstrong, Caruso or Sinatra (cf. below). Shilkret who couldn’t ensure alone the composition of the work, required a part from Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco (1885-1968), who entrusted another of them to Ernst Toch (1887-1964), who put him in relationwith Alexandre Tansman, which on his turn contacted Darius Milhaud (1892-1974). Lastly, Stravinsky composed the last part (Bartók, Hindemith and Prokofiev were also approached).

It will be thus the only time where Schoenberg and Stravinsky appeared together on a score. They hated each other, in particular after Schoenberg wrote a satirical choral part named “Modernsky”. Although living only few miles one of each othe,r they crossed only on rare occasions, in particular at the time of general of this work, in spite of the precautions taken by the organizers…

Work is for orchestra, chorus and narrators. The only real bond is the Bible, since each composer had written in his own idiom, quite recognizable each time. During the première, Shilkert placed the Prelude of Schoenberg in penultimate position, frightened by the modernity of the language. Here is his prelude:
